John Weil was born in Baltimore, Md. on April 11, 1937 and moved to Charlotte, N.C. as a child. He learned computer technology when computers were first being developed and later worked for IBM. In 1966 he co-founded Systems Associates, Inc., a company that developed software programs for hospitals and clinics.
